Abstract

A thermoplastic composition capable of being formed into films having characteristic properties of paper comprises a high density polyethylene resin having a melt index of from 0.1 to 2.0 decigrams/minute and additives which modify the polyethylene so that the composition has the desired properties said additives being: (1) from 5 to 50 parts by weight of an ethylene/vinyl copolymer accommodation resin having a melt index of from 0.2 to 100 decigrams per minute; (2) (a) from 5 to 75 parts by weight of a finely divided siliceous filler, or (b) from 5 to 50 parts by weight of thermoplastic unmodified polystyrene resin having a molecular weight of at least 48,000, or (c) from 5 to 60 parts by weight of a mixture of said unmodified polystyrene and a finely-divided siliceous filler, said parts being relative to 100 parts by weight of the polyethylene. Ethylene/vinyl copolymer accommodation resins are copolymers of ethylene with a monomer containing a <FORM:1090059/C3/1> group of which vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, styrene and propylene are exemplified; many others are specified. Suitable siliceous fillers are diatomaceous earth (exemplified), silica, silicates, silica gels, silica aluminates, and asbestos. Additional fillers, especially pigments such as the exemplified titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate, and other conventional additives and stabilizers may be included in the compositions. Stress whitening of the films produced from the compositions, and surface treatment of these films by corona discharge, flame treatment or oxidative chemical treatment to impart printability are also mentioned.
