Abstract

1,146,421. Polymer compositions. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 28 April, 1966, No. 18734/66. Addition to 1,090,059. Heading C3P. Thermoplastic compositions comprise a high density polyethylene resin having a melt index of 0À001 to 0À1 dg./min. or a mixture of high density polyethylene resins having said melt index, and for each 100 parts by weight thereof (1) 5 to 50 parts by weight of an accommodation resin which is a copolymer of ethylene with an olefinically unsaturated monomer, containing more than 50 weight per cent of ethylene and having a melt index of 0À2 to 100 dg./min., and (2) 5 to 75 parts by weight of a finely divided inorganic filler of average particle size 0À1 to 20 microns, or 5 to 50 parts by weight of thermoplastic unmodified polystyrene resin filler of molecular weight at least 48,000, or 5 to 60 parts by weight of a mixture of said unmodified polystyrene resin filler and said finely divided inorganic filler. Specified inorganic fillers are diatomaceous earth, silica, a metal silicate, silica gel, silica-alumina, asbestos, calcium oxide, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium dioxide, lead oxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and lead sulphate. The compositions may be extruded to give paper-like films. An example describes a composition of polyethylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, diatomaceous earth and titanium dioxide.
