Abstract

1,128,317. Cables. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 14 June, 1966 [22 June, 1965], No. 26381/66. Heading H1A. Insulation for stranded conductors 1 surrounded by paper wrapping 2 comprises a layer 3 of cured polyolefin surrounded by a layer 4 of inorganic fibrous material such as asbestos impregnated with a chlorinated polymeric material. The lifetime of the insulated wire, determined by accelerated heat ageing is greater than that of a wire lacking the impregnated fibrous layer. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene or polypentene, or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, butene, pentene, or vinyl acetate, an ethylene-propylene rubber or ethylenepropylene terpolymer rubber. The polyolefin is applied by extrusion and incorporates a cross-linking agent. Alternatively curing is achieved by irradiation. The extruded composition may also contain antioxidants, e.g. hydroquinone ethers, aryl amines, aniline derivatives, wax-formulated polyamines, phenol derivatives, acetone-phenylamine reaction products such as hydroquinolines, and other conventional additives. The asbestos may be applied to the polyolefin layer by means of a carding machine, and impregnated with an organic solution of the chlorinated polymer. The latter may be a chlorinated elastomer, e.g. polyvinyl halides, copolymers of vinyl halides with vinyl acetate or other vinyl esters, or with acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or acrylate esters, or with unsaturated dibasic acid esters, or chloroprene rubbers. Posthalogenated preparations may be used, e.g. olefin polymers or copolymers chlorinated or chlorosulphonated after polymerization, or chlorinated natural or synthetic rubbers.
