Abstract
Vinyl chloride is prepared from methane or gaseous mixtures containing methane by submitting the gas to a partial combustion for less than 10 milliseconds at up to 20 atmospheres pressure, p quenching, purifying by washing with a solvent at from -20 to -55 DEG C. to remove aromatic hydrocarbons, diacetylene and acetylene homologues, drying, and treating the acetylene containing gas with gaseous hydrochloric acid in a furnace with a catalyst, comprising carbon impregnated with mercuric chloride, and finally concentrating and purifying the gas to obtain the vinyl chloride. The catalyst is preferably maintained at from 100 to 120 DEG C., and the vinyl chloride is separated by absorption on for example active carbon, silica gel, or activated alumina, or by selective solution with for example petroleum kerosene or dichloroethane, and finally distilled. Specification 876,261 is referred to.
