Abstract

In a gas fired cooking apparatus of the kind wherein a burner is disposed adjacent the bottom of at least one of the upright walls of the oven, the burner is of a single jet type of approximately the same heating capacity as a normal multi-jet burner tube employed in an oven of similar proportions. In the form shown the invention is applied to a domestic cooker, the oven chamber having top, bottom, and rear walls 10, 11, 13 respectively. A trough 16 extends downwardly from the bottom 11 of the oven adjacent to the back wall 13 and has its front wall extended a short distance above the bottom 11 of the oven compartment as shown at 19. A single non-aerated, flat-flame burner 17 extends centrally through the bottom of the trough. The axis of the jet tube may be inclined upwardly and forwardly with or without a deflector plate between it and the rear wall. In a modification, for a gas cooking apparatus of commercial application, a single burner is arranged below the oven and at the front thereof and is arranged to project a single substantially horizontal flame towards the centre of the oven and wherein a horizontal baffle is disposed above the flame and a vertical baffle is disposed away from the rear wall of the oven so that the flame or products of combustion sweep upwardly after initially avoiding contact with the material being cooked.
