Abstract
925,302. Rotary wing aircraft. K. H. WALLIS. Nov. 15, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 39641/60. Class 4. An auto-rotating rotary winged aircraft includes rotor blades carried by a rotor spindle running upon bearings which are mounted on a gimbal system having one spindle arranged to allow movement of the rotor spindle in the pitching plane whilst another spindle allows movement in or about the rolling plane, characterised in that the pitch spindle axis is arranged forwardly of the axis of, and below, the rotor spindle. The aircraft structure, rotor drive and control mechanism are as described in Specification 925,301. The fixed rotorsupporting structural pylon is shown at 23 and the stub shaft mounting for the rotor head bearings at 40. A bifurcated extension 45 to pylon 23 carries a bush 44 for a shaft 43 parallel to the roll axis of the aircraft, the shaft being part of a yoke 42 which carries a pivot 47 for a control plate 41 to which shaft 40 is attached, the control plate being connected by rods (not shown) to the control column whereby it may be rocked about pivot 47 to provide control in pitch. Since pivot 47 is forward of shaft 40 drag loads on the rotor are compensated to some extent by the weight of the aircraft and to allow for aerodynamic drag shaft 43 is biased by a spring 46 which will become compressed as forward speed increases. Specification 925,303 also is referred to.
