Abstract

[Also in Group XIX] To enable a trailing edge tab on a helicopter rotor blade to be pre-set along the span of the blade to angles that give each blade, before assembly on a rotor head, standard pitching moment characteristics, apparatus is provided for determining the pitching moment of a blade at intervals along its span. A blade 10, having a pliable trailing edge tab 12, has the root end of the spar 11 secured on its axis to a wire 14 which passes through a bushing 33 in a bracket 32 mounted on an upright support. The upper end of the wire is clamped by a stud 19 in a collar 18 rotatably secured to a further bracket 17, screws 21 being provided to act on a lever 22 secured to the collar 18 in order that the blade may be rotated about its axis. Tracks 26 are positioned forward of the leading edge of the blade to support a movable carriage 25 which carried a jet nozzle 23 connected with a fan 24 driven by a suitable motor. A clamp 15 secured to the end of the spar 11 carries a pointer 30 co-operating with a scale 31 graduated to give readings of pitching moment of the blade. In operation, the carriage 25 is located with the airstream from the jet 23 directed towards the leading edge of the blade at one end thereof and the screws 21 are adjusted until the blade is set in a " no-lift " attitude as determined by a scale 29 provided to give indication of pendular oscillations. The blade will then turn about its axis against the torsional resilience of the wire 14, and if the reading on the scale 31 differs from a desired value the portion of the tab 12 subjected to the airstream is adjusted until the desired reading is obtained. This operation is repeated at intervals along the span of the blade by movement of the carriage 25 and subsequent adjustment of the appropriate portion of tab. By this means each blade has standard characteristics and the necessity of whirling a complete rotor to track the blades is obviated.
