Abstract

754,408. Trimming helicopter rotor blades. DOMAN HELICOPTERS Inc. Sept. 29, 1954 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 28111/54. Class 4. [Also in Group XIX] A device for measuring the aerodynamic pitching moment of a part of a fullsized aerofoil B as an aid to trimming helicopter rotor blades or the like, comprises a frame 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 carrying at least two spaced means 17, 19, 20, 24 for supporting the aerofoil, having freedom of movement laterally and being angularly adjustable about the mean or approximate aerodynamic centre of the aerofoil, means to adjust angularly at least one of the supporting means, means to measure the turning moment of the aerofoil, a jet mechanism having a nozzle which is short compared with the aerofoil in the direction of its span and is directed towards the leading edge of the aerofoil, and means for moving the jet and supporting means relative to one another to present the jet nozzle at various points of the aerofoil. In Figs. 1 and 2, the aerofoil B is received in a notch 18 in each of two horizontal members 17 suspended on knife edges 21 in line with the aerodynamic centre C, from two rods 19, 20, themselves suspended on knife edges 23 from a horizontal member 24. This member is pivoted on a knife edge 27, in line with edges 23, on a bar 28 secured to a structural member 12 of the frame. A further bar 35 secured to member 12 supports a lever 33, 37, the neutral position of which is determined by a screw 39 and spring 38. The end of lever 33 is connected by rod 32 to the member 24, and is attached to a strain gauge 34. The jet nozzle and assembly is movable on rails so as to present the jet to any narrow portion of the blade. In operation, the blade is angularly adjusted by screw 39 until no lateral force is exerted on the blade by the jet, as indicated by the setting of a pointer 52 on a scale 53, or by a pointer 54 on a scale 55 secured to the jet nozzle. The strain gauge is read to indicate the pitching moment, and a trim tab T is adjusted to give a required value of pitching moment all the way along the blade. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the blade is set in a notch in a semi-cyelindrical member rotatable in the member 17 to adjust the blade in place of screw 39. Fig. 3 (not shown) shows a jig for holding the blade straight.
