Abstract
872,687. Screw propellers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Dec. 18, 1959 [Dec. 19,1958], No. 43109/59. Class 114. A propeller comprises a plurality of banks of blades including a forward bank 16 and an aft bank 18 mounted on a hub 20, the blades of the banks 16 and 18 being similar in size, equal in number, and driven at the same speed in the same direction, and indexed relative to each other whereby the sparwise axis of a blade of the forward bank forms an acute angle with the spanwise axis of a corresponding blade of the aft bank, and means for varying the pitch of the blades of one of the banks. Said acute index angle lies between 20 degrees and 35 degrees. Corresponding blades of banks 16 and 18 cooperate in pairs deferring an aerofoil having an effective camber. The pitch of blades 18 is fixed, that of blades 16 is varied under the control of a governor 24, thereby automaically varying said effective camber as a function of speed.
