925,122. Magnetic holding devices. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 22, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 32585/60. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXVI] In a fluid-tight lifting electromagnet, more particularly for handling rods in a submerged atomic pile, comprising a fluidtight casing 1 containing a winding and core 11, 12 and a means which indicates whether or not the electromagnet is engaging a piece (not shown) to be lifted, the core and winding are movable, relative to the casing 1, between a position of minimum reluctance in which the magnetic circuit is completed through casing wall 2 and the end of the piece, and a position determined by a spring 14. Thus, with the winding 11 energized, the core 12 is drawn down when wall 2 contacts the head of the piece, and when the winding is de-energized, the spring 14 returns the core to the position shown. The core movement is conveyed by a rod 19 to the operating lever 20 of a microswitch 21 whose conductors 22 together with winding power-supply conductors 18 pass through a fluid-tight seal in the cover 3 of casing 1 and are enclosed by a tube 8, e.g. of polythene. The seal comprises an outer bush 7 screwed on cover 3 and holding an inner bush 5 tightly against core 4 of the cover. Bush 7 is locked by nut 9 to cover 3 which is, e.g., argon-welded to casing 1 which may be of stainless steel.
