Abstract

888,394. Controlling nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 2, 1960 [March 2, 1959], No. 7242/59. Class 39(4) Shut-down rods of a reactor are supported by electromagnets with three windings, two of which must be de-energised before a rod can be released; this prevents shut-down due to electrical faults. The Figure shows electromagnet 1 with coils 2, each coil being in series with coils in two other electromagnets. Each series of coils is energised through a magnetic amplifier 3 by one phase of one of three three-phase supplies. A reactor fault will de-energise contactors 14, 15, 16 and cut off the current supply to the coils 2; failure of one contactor to open would still allow the rods to be released, but failure of one power supply would not cause release.
