Abstract

689,342. Magnetic amplifiers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and GILCHRIST, D. C. Jan. 1, 1952 [Jan. 1, 1951], No. 59/51. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Group XXXV] In a magnetic amplifier arrangement in which two control windings are differentially energized, a rectifier is connected between the windings so as to prevent a selected winding from being energized more than the other. As applied to the automatic control of the voltage of a D.C. generator (see Group XXXV), a pair of cathode coupled valves 10, 11 control the saturating current in the control windings 13, 14, 20, 21 of a pair of saturable reactors 15, 16, the A.C. output of which is rectified to supply the field of the generator. If the generator voltage (applied to the grid of valve 10) is below a reference voltage (applied to the grid of valve 11) the anode current of valve 11 exceeds that of valve 10, hence the excitation of windings 20, 21 exceeds that of windings 13, 14 and the reactors are sufficiently saturated to pass current to the exciter field. If the generator voltage exceeds the reference voltage, then the anode current of valve 10 would tend to exceed that of valve 11 and the resultant saturation of the reactors would cause unstable operation but for the rectifier 24 which links the two control windings and by conducting under these conditions maintains the control currents equal. It is stated that the invention is also applicable to reactors with control windings having unequal numbers of turns and to reactors with positive feed-back.
