Abstract

885,846. Electromagnets. GARRETT CORPORATION. May 23, 1958 [May 23, 1957], No. 16709/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XXIX] A fluid-pressure servomotor control valve (see Group XXIX) is actuated electromagnetically by currents supplied to a pair of coils 45, 47 in a housing 40 of the valve. An armature 54 movable in the coils between opposed springs 61, 67 is connected at one end to the valve member 16 and at the other end is centralized radially by a spring plate 68. The central opening of the coils is substantially the same as the central opening in a middle spacing member 46, whilst the central opening in end spacing members 50, 52 and 62 is substantially smaller than the central opening in the coils in order to provide a good flux path so that a small change in the electrical signal will move the valve. An electric control circuit for applying continuous signals to the coils 45, 47 to move the valve in the opening and closing directions respectively, is described, or alternatively a high-frequency alternating current may be applied to one coil to cause " dither " of the movable elements whilst an actuating current component is applied to the other coil.
