Abstract

811,600. Nuclear reactor control rods. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1957 [Nov. 9, 1956], No. 34331/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor control rod shut-down circuit, discrimination is effected between reactor faults and faults in the A.C. electric supply to the shut-down circuit so that the latter do not interfere with reactor operation. A supply source alternator and a standby alternator are provided for the shut-down circuit and the standby is automatically substituted for the alternator in use, should the latter fail. The energization of the relay controlling the shut-down rods is drawn from a separate D.C. source and the A.C. energized relays which in response to reactor faults, normally cause the D.C. shut-down relay to operate, would tend to open during the interval of change between one alternator and the standby. To prevent the consequent operation of the shut-down relay the contacts of the A.C. relays are temporarily short-circuited, during that interval, by a relay having a delay period longer than the change-over time.
