A detector device for ascertaining the presence of a nuclear fuel rod in a fuel element during handling by a grab, comprises a feeler 10 to be displaced by contact with the upper end of the fuel rod whereby to move a magnetic core 5 into a coil 11 to change the inductance thereof. Spring 9 is stiffer than spring 8. When used in a grab comprising a D.C. energized electromagnet EV in which a 50 c/s supply is used to verify operation of the electromagnet, a high frequency supply may be superimposed on the D.C. and 50 c/s and the coil 11 may be connected in parallel with the electromagnet EV, a capacitor C 3 being provided to block the D.C. and 50 c/s and to pass the high frequency.
