A saturable reactor controlling the supply of alternating current from a source 7 to a resistor 8 and a load circuit 9, 10 has two balanced direct current control windings 1, 2. The windings 1, 2 are in opposition and one of them is shunted by a Zener diode 5. The control current has no effect on the reactor until the back resistance of the diode breaks down.
