Abstract

862,377. Automatic volume control. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 13, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1958], No. 32939/58. Class 40 (4). A symmetrical transistor is used as the variable impedance element of a compressor or expander. As shown in the compressor of Fig. 1 the symmetrical transistor 5 is placed in shunt across the line and is controlled by the output signal rectified and applied between the base and a tap on transformer 1, the tap being chosen to balance currents in the transistor. As shown in the expander of Fig. 2, the symmetrical transistor 18 is connected in series with the line and is controlled by the rectified input.
