Abstract
886,008. Protective arrangements. LEGG (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., and ROCK, A. Aug. 16, 1960 [Sept. 5, 1959], No. 30390/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XL (c)] In an electromagnetic relay circuit a relay R is energized through the emitter-collector circuit of a transistor T which is caused to conduct by a voltage applied to its base, the latter being connected to the junction between a zener diode Z<SP>1</SP> and resistor r<SP>3</SP>; the diode being connected to a tapping point of a potential divider r<SP>1</SP>, r<SP>2</SP> across the supply voltage and through the resistor r<SP>3</SP> to the positive supply line. When the supply voltage increases, the reverse voltage across the diode s1 increases until the critical voltage of the latter is reached and the diode conducts so that the resulting potential across the resistor r<SP>3</SP> causes the transistor to conduct and the relay to operate. A series dropper resistor r<SP>4</SP> may be used if the supply voltage is in excess of the voltage rating of the components. Additional protection, Fig. 3, may be obtained by providing the relay R with auxiliary contacts C1, C2 and resistor r<SP>5</SP> so that when the relay operates the transistor T is cut out of the circuit and the supply to the zener diode Z<SP>1</SP> is interrupted. Alternatively, a further zener diode, Fig. 4 (not shown), may be connected across part of the resistor r<SP>1</SP> so as to stabilize the supply to the first diode Z<SP>1</SP>. A rectifier or capacitor may be connected across the relay operating coil.
