Abstract

923,444. Capping ropes. J. R. MORTON. Feb. 6, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961], No. 4311/61. Class 109. A method of capping a rope 17 of synthetic or natural fibres comprises impregnating the end of the rope with a binding agent, inserting a rigid core 6 into the impregnated end of the rope to enlarge that end and then drawing said enlarged end into a tapered sleeve 1 so that the fibres of the rope are gripped between the sleeve 1 and the core 6. The binding agent may be allowed to set hard before or after the enlarged end is drawn into the tapered sleeve. In the latter case the sleeve 1 acts as a mould and in the former case a separate split mould be used. As shown, the core 6 has an axial hole 8 through which a bunch of central rope strands may pass. To ensure that the impregnated and enlarged end of the cable is securely compressed within the sleeve 1 the capping may include a plug 12 that screws into the sleeve to compress a spring member 16 against an inner sleeve 10, the sleeve 10 having a flared end that cooperates with a sharp taper 9 of the core 6 to form an annular space 11 through which the outer strands of the rope extend. The binding agent may be in the form of a polyester resin, that is to say, a synthetic resin based on unsaturated polyesters that are crosslinked, during setting, by a monomer such as styrene.
