Abstract

884,473. Anchor-bolts; ropes. BRITISH ROPES Ltd. May 28, 1959 [May 28, 1958; Feb. 10, 1959], Nos. 17066/58 and 4644/59. Classes 89(1) and 109. An anchor-bolt for mine-roofs &c. comprises a bolt member 20 Fig. 1, made of flexible steel wire cable or rope, e.g. of the kind disclosed in Specifications 794,411, 794,112, with screwed pieces 21, 22 swaged on opposite ends, piece 21 carrying a tapered nut 28 engaging in a split sleeve 26, externally serrated, and abutting a shoulder 29, and piece 22 carrying a nut 31 and bearing-plate 30. The screwed end 22, Fig. 2, may be secured to the cable by swaging the enlarged part 36 down to the diameter of part 37. In another arrangement, the rope is inserted about two-thirds along a tube which is swaged almost to the end of the rope. A screwed rod is then inserted in the other end leaving a projecting portion and the tube is then swaged on to the rod. In use, end 21 is inserted in a bore-hole until plate 30 abuts the surface around the hole. Member 20 is then turned to expand sleeve 26 and lastly nut 31 is tightened to press plate 30 against said surface. In a modification one or more pronged, members 50, Fig. 6, are placed on piece 21 and retained by a nut 57. After insertion in the bore-hole, the bolt member is pulled to cause the prongs to dig into the bore-wall. In another arrangement, the members 50 are replaced by one or more shallow dished members which may have a serrated periphery. In yet another arrangement, pronged members 54a, Fig. 11, spaced by frusto-conical washers 60 are placed on piece 21 with the prongs facing the free end of the piece, and retained either by a separate nut or a screwed frusto-conical nut 60a. After insertion the bolt member is turned to expand the prongs against the bore-well.
