Abstract

930,639. Riveted joints. TOWNSEND CO. Jan. 12, 1960, No. 1185/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A rivet assembly comprises a tubular rivet with a tapering counterbore extending into the head, a mandrel comprising a stem joined by a tapered portion to a tail of greater cross-section than the bore of the rivet, and a rocking ring adapted to slide on the mandrel and be a force fit in the counterbore in the rivet head, so that after setting the ring is forced into the counterbore to lock the mandrel. The rivet 11 has a cylindrical shank 13 and a through bore 15 extending from a counterbore 18 in the tail 19 of the rivet to the tapering counterbore 16 in the rivet head. The bore 15 is reduced at 17 to provide a bearing for the mandrel. The undersurface 20 of the head is concave. The mandrel 12 comprises a stem 23 with a pulling portion at one end and an enlarged tail 25, joined to the stem by a tapered portion 26. Adjacent the tapered portion 26 is a locking groove 27 and there is a breaker groove 28 spaced from the looking groove by a band 29. A locking ring 32 is threaded on to the stem of the mandrel and pressed on to the splines 30 where it is retained as a friction fit. When the rivet is installed the mandrel is engaged by a conventional riveting gun and drawn into the rivet until the tail of the rivet starts to upset and the plates 22 are drawn tightly together. As the pull continues the tail 25 of the mandrel which is made of ductile material is wire drawn into the rivet shank until the locking groove 27 is adjacent the recess in the head. The pressure previously applied to the rivet head is then transferred to the locking ring 32 which is forced into the tapered counterbore 16, and finally the mandrel is broken-off flush with the rivet head. The external surface of the rivet shank is preferably lubricated with colloidal graphite in a resinous binder.
