[Also in Group XXIV] An agitator device for the ink fountain 12 of a printing press comprises an elongated housing 14 supported at each end by brackets 16 which are pivoted at 19 so as to vary the rotational disposition of said housing relative to said roller and clamped to the press frame by screws 32, an endless movable conveyer 48 mounted in said housing and adapted to cause a mixer head 42 supporting a conical mixer member 34 on a rotatable shaft 38 to slide longitudinally in said frame, means for reversing the direction of movement of said head in the housing 42, and means for rotating the shaft 38 simultaneously with the movement of said head by the conveyer 48. The conveyer chain 48 is driven by a motor 52 and is connected to the head 42 by a pin 60 fixed to the chain and accommodated in a block 62 slidably mounted in a transverse slot 64 in the bead 42. As the chain is driven around sprockets 50 and 58 the pin 60 urges the block 62 and thus the head 42 in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing 14, causing head 42 to travel back and forth. The mixer member 34 is fixed to one end of the shaft 38 which is connected detachably, for cleaning or replacement purposes, by a spring-lock coupling 39, Fig. 8 (not shown), to a drive-shaft 40 supported rotatably by bearing rings 66 and 68 in the head 42. The rear plate 46 of the housing 14 supports a rack the downwardly disposed teeth 71, Fig. 3, of which engage a pinion 70 fixed on the shaft 40. The teeth 71 and the pinion 70 are so constructed that when the head moves in the direction A the mixer 34 is simultaneously rotated anti-clockwise so as to prevent the build up of ink at the ends of the fountain 12. The head 42 is supported and guided for longitudinal movement by a keyway 76 therein which engages an elongated track 74 on a front plate 44 of the housing 14. In-an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), cam means are provided at each end of the conveyer chain to cause the engagement and disengagement of the pin 60 and the cam means are adjustable in position to alter the length of reciprocal travel of the head and the mixer 34.
