Abstract

1,039,831. Inking-apparatus. BALDWINGEGENHEIMER CORPORATION. May 16, 1963 [Oct. 11, 1962], No. 19589/63. Heading B6C. An agitator device for the ink fountain 12 of a printing press comprises an elongated housing 14 supported at each end by a bracket 16, an endless conveyer chain 30 mounted in the housing and adapted to cause a mixer unit 10 supporting a conical mixer 20 on rotatable axially aligned and connected shafts 22 and 26 to slide longitudinally in said housing, means for reversing the direction of movement of said unit in the housing, and means for rotating the connected shafts 22 and 26 simultaneously with the movement of the unit 10 by the conveyer. The latter is driven by a motor 32 and is connected to the head by a pin 38 fixed to the conveyer and accommodated in a block 40 slidably mounted in a transverse slot 42 in the head 28 of the unit 10. As the conveyer chain 30 is driven around sprockets 34 and 36 the pin urges the block 40 and thus the unit 10 in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing 14, causing the unit to travel back and forth. Rotation of the mixer 20 is effected through the engagement of a pinion 44 on the shaft 26 and a rack 46 in the housing. The mixer 20 is vertically disposed, the tip 48 being positioned adjacent the intersection of the inking roller 18 and the forward edge 49 of the fountain bed 13. In this location the mixer side 21 is spaced from the circumference of the ink roller 18 a distance " d " whilst being co-extensive with a segment "s" of the roller circumference. Thus the ink is urged against the roller by the tip 48 and the side 21. A plough 50 is provided to coact with the unit 10 and comprises spaced extension 52 and 54 aligned with the shafts 22 and 26, an inclined section 56 and a tapered end portion 58. The plough is secured to the unit head 28 and travelling therewith takes the ink adjacent the bed 13 and at the back section of fountain 12 remote from roller 18, and directs it towards mixer 20. Section 56 urges the back section ink towards mixer 20 whilst portion 58 directs the ink adjacent bed 13 towards mixer 20.
