Abstract

<PICT:0923126/III/1> An abrasive and polishing material 10 comprises a sheet 12 of flexible self-supporting material and a coating on at least one surface 14 comprising a layer 16 of a substantially equally flexible elastomeric composition and abrasive particles 20 capable of passing through a 500 mesh screen located within said layer, which layer is bonded to the sheet. The sheet may be a film of an elastomeric material, e.g. a polyolefin such as polyethylene, the film being substantially 1 to 2 m. thick, or of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, chlorinated synthetic rubber, vinyl acetate or nylon 6-6; a foamed layer of a natural rubber latex; leather of a soft and stretchy nature, e.g. glazed kid; wood; card or piece of twine; or a woven or non-woven fibrous synthetic material, e.g. non-woven nylon-acetate. The abrasive particles, which may be capable of passing through a 600 mesh screen, may be of silicon carbide, emery or aluminium oxide, may be uniformly distributed throughout the layer which resiliently holds the particles in place. The layer may be composed of a cellulose lacquer or a flexible vinyl or silicone elastomer, e.g. vinyl butyl ethers, polychloroprene, styrenebutadiene, isobutylenes, acrylic esters such as poly-n-butyl methacrylate, butadiene-phenolicrubber composition, and may include plasticizers. The material may be produced by applying a mixture of a liquid resinous material and the abrasive particles to the surface of the sheet, and heating the coated sheet to cause the resinous material to form a solid elastomeric coating holding the particles on the surface of the sheet. The material becomes electrostatically charged during use and attracts dust and other particles from the article being polished.
