Abstract

A tumbling material for polishing comprises dry fragments of a lightweight porous material, which has a specific gravity of about one and a largest particle dimension within the range of 1/4 -\ba1/32 inch, embedded on the surface of which is a film of dry abrasive powder grains which preferably have a largest particle dimension of about 1/100 inch. These powder grains may be either embedded in the larger fragments by rolling, or be made adherent thereto by a solution of "Tylose" (Registered Trade Mark) varnish or other adhesive with which the larger fragments may be coated. The larger fragments are preferably either of pumice or or of cement which has been rendered porous by aerating an unset cement mixture with air or carbon dioxide. The abrasive powder coating is preferably aluminium oxide which may be picked up and held on the surface of the fragments by pumice powder. In general about 15 parts of the porous fragments are used per part of abrasive powder. The compositions are of particular use in polishing and deburring fine lightweight metal stampings by tumbling.
