Abstract

Sound damping structures of high effectiveness consisting of a substrate coated with an unconstrained layer of a viscoelastic material containing at least 35% by vol. of irregularly shaped, non-uniformly sized, filler particles having a specific gravity of at least 2.5, a maximum dimension of 0.1 mm, and a ratio of largest to smallest particle size of at least 40/1. The substrate maybe a household appliance, car, ship or building structure. Preferably the viscoelastic material is a polyether polyurethane, a C2H4/vinly acetate copoymer, or a Me methacrylate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate/methacrylic acid terpolymer iminiated with propylene imine. In an example a thin layer of a polyproylene glycol/butanediol/toluene diisocyanate polyurethane containing 64% of FeS2 particles is adhered to a steel panel, which then shows an improvement factor of 19 when tested for vibrational damping .
