Abstract

1,006,005. Grinding. ARMOUR & CO. June 13, 1962 [June 14, 1961], No. 22791/62. Heading B3D. [Also in Division B5] An abrasive pad or belt, Fig. 3, comprises a web of non-woven organic fibres, e.g. nylon, the fibres being bonded at points where they contact or cross by soft, vulcanizable, binder material having a Knopp hardness number of 6 or less, preferably 1, an abrasive material bonded to the fibres by the binder, and backing material adhesively bonded to the web. The fibres are preferably 1 ¢ to 2 inches long and curled or crimped and the randomly felted mass is coated throughout with the binder which is preferably an aqueous dispersion or a vulcanizable elastomer, e.g. natural or synthetic latex or a reclaimed rubber dispersion compounded with other ingredients to facilitate application and curing; P.V.C. and vinyl latex are included among examples disclosed. The abrasive may be applied with a binder slurry by spraying, dipping or rolling or after coating the web with the binder and applying the abrasive by rolling or electro-static means either before or after the web is laminated to the backing to Fig. 1, by a flexible adhesive layer 12. After coating with binder and abrasive the web is given a top sizing coat of the binder by spraying or rollercoating means and cured at 250-325‹ F. The abrasive grains may comprise a mixture of silicon carbide 150-600 grit size, pumice and aluminium oxide (120-280) in proportions according to purpose of the article.
