[Class 60] Abrasive tools comprise a number of separate bonded abrasive elements individually attached to the surface of a layer of yieldable material, thin in comparison with the abrasive elements and secured to a flexible backing. In the production of abrasive bands or belts, the backing 1, which may be of paper, fabric, leather thin metal, &c., is first coated with a priming coat of adhesive, which may comprise rubber and sulphur dispersed in benzol, &c., or a colloidal dispersion of an isomer of rubber, and a layer 2 of soft, unvulcanized rubber 2 is then applied, and coated with the adhesive. The abrasive coating 3 is then applied and the article cured or vulcanized ; if the abrasive is applied in an unbroken form, it is cut before or after vulcanization or may be broken by flexing so as to obtain small independent elements. Alternatively the abrasive elements may be in the form of separately moulded pieces 5 and this construction may be applied to the manufacture of abrasive discs. Fig. 7 shows a yieldable polishing wheel wherein the abrasive elements either applied as separate elements or fractured as described above, are mounted by the yieldable layer 2 on a backing 1, which is secured to a fabric body 11 ; or the backing may be in the form of an endless belt mounted on a drum with or without a resilient layer, for example, of soft rubber, between the drum and the backing. In another construction of an abrasive disc, a metal disc has attached thereto on one face, by a yieldable cement, abrasive elements separated by gaps running obliquely to radii of the disc. Instead of the use of rubber as the yieldable layer, polyhydric alcohol polybasic acid condensation products or modified vinyl resins may be used.
