Abstract

923,012. Valves. F. SPRAGUE. Jan. 24, 1961, No. 2719/61. Class 135. A valve, e.g. controlling a pneumatic windscreen wiper incorporating a parking device, has a body 10, with two, as shown, or more parallel bores 12, 20, interconnected by a passage 30; a port 32 leading to the parking device opens laterally into the bore or bores 20, each of which has an axial port 26 connected to the wiper motor, whilst the bore 12 incorporates a pressure supply port 11. The inner parts of one or more of the bores has a vent port 36. Across the bore 12 is a seat 40 with a spider 46 guiding the stem 48 of a movable frusto-conical closure member 50; the stem 48 which is attached to a piston 52 has an inwardlyextending part 56 slidable in the tubular rod 58 of a disc 60 on the other side of which is a plunger 62. A spring 64 is disposed intermediate the piston 52 and disc 60. The bore 20 houses a spring-loaded piston closure 70 with a plunger 74. Both plungers 62, 74 protrade beyond the body into an annular cam groove 96 or 98 in a manually-operable cam disc 84 whereby the positions of the closure 50 and piston 70 are controlled. Upon rotating the cam disc 84 the closure 50 is slightly opened and the piston closure 70 covers the port 32 whereby the supply port 11 is connected to the motor port 26; continued rotation of the disc 84 then controls the position of the closure 50 only and hence the speed of the motor; the cam grooves may each incorporate an increased depression to enable the end of the groove to be " felt." Further movement of the cam disc restores the parts to the position shown so that the motor port 26 is connected to the parking port 32 whereby the parking device is operated. In a modification, the piston closure slidably houses the piston of the other closure, the two closures being concentric.
