Abstract

879,522. Valves. HENRION, M. C. E. March 23, 1959 [Dec. 3, 1958; Feb. 23, 1959], No. 9954/59. Class 135. In a butterfly valve of the kind in which the valve disc 1 is supported by a spindle that does not pass through the seating area in the valve body so that a continuous, peripheral seal is obtained around the disc when closed the body is formed with an annular recess 7b closed by a sleeve 7a that is welded in position to provide a smooth surface continuous with the bore in the body, and means is provided for applying fluid pressure to the recess when the valve is closed to press the sleeve 7a into contact with the disc. As shown, the valve is actuated by a shaft 9 connected to the disc by an arm 9a and link 9b and is driven by a gear sector (not shown) meshing with a worm 3 mounted on a spindle 2a carrying a hand wheel 2. When the sector engages a stop (not shown) corresponding to closure of the valve continued rotation of the hand wheel causes axial displacement of the spindle 2a against a spring 5 due to the action of the worm. Such displacement is transmitted to a piston 4 which pressurizes a liquid-filled system 6, 6a communicating with the recess 7b. In a modification, the valve is actuated by a nut which moves axially on a rotatable, threaded spindle and is connected to the valve disc by linkage. Displacement of the piston 4 takes place by engagement of the nut with an amplifying lever connected to the piston as the valve disc reaches its closed position. Since, in this embodiment, the threaded spindle does not move axially the hand wheel may be replaced by, e.g. a transmission pulley.
