922,182. Luffing-arm apparatus on vehicles. R. L. WOOD. July 23, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 23747/58. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). A vertical ram 7 (Fig. 1), for tipping the body 2 of a vehicle serves also to raise and lower a beam 20 for loading the vehicle. Either the beam itself, or a terminal portion 65 (Fig. 8), of it luffs. This may be effected by a ram 67 (Fig. 8), a ram 45 (Fig. 2), or by anchoring one end of the beam 20 (Fig. 1), by means of a chain 24. Alternatively, the beam can be luffed manually and locked in its adjusted positions by pins engaging registering holes on brackets on the beam and on the ram. The beam may carry tackle 22 (Fig. 1), or a travelling hoist carriage. It may alternatively carry a shovel or a lifting platform which may be mounted between two laterally-spaced members together forming the beam. The beam may telescope as shown in Fig. 2. The invention may be applied to tipping vehicles having twin rams 7. To slew the jib the ram 17 may be rotated by a rack-and-pinion mechanism operated by an hydraulic ram.
