Abstract
1300408 Loading and unloading vehicles C B HARPER 30 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 38424/69 Heading B8E A vehicle comprises two or more detachable load carrying containers 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which are lifted on to or let down from the rear of the vehicle by being swung on a derrick construction 7 mounted on the vehicle, the rear container 6<SP>1</SP> being in the position for engagement with the derrick 7 whereas the forward container 6 is movable along the vehicle into the rear position for engagement with the derrick. The container 6 is mounted on a roller trolley 4 movable along rails 2 on the vehicle either by winch or hydraulic means. The derrick 7 comprises a pair of parallel arms from the top of which chains 13 depend for connection to the container to be moved, the derrick being swung by a double acting ram 9. A pivotal catch arm 15 is provided at the rear of the vehicle and in its operative position engages the base of the rear container to cause it to tip and empty when the derrick is swung outwardly. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), two derricks are provided longitudinally of the vehicle, one for lifting the containers to and from the vehicle, and the other to move a container between the forward and rear positions on the vehicle. The two derricks are coupled by a double acting ram and each derrick is lockable to the vehicle body to provide a reaction point for one end of the ram when one or other of the derricks is operated. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the roller trolley arrangement and the double derrick arrangement are used in series on a vehicle for carrying three containers. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) a three container vehicle includes three derricks provided in series, the rear two being connected by a double acting ram and the forward two being linked by a removable fixed length arm whereby all three derricks are operable by the one ram. The removable fixed length arm may be replaced by a telescopic arm which is lockable at its shortest length.
