Apparatus for folding a projecting portion of a wrapper which has been applied round a rectangular package, over an end face comprises a member 11 pivoted at 13, a folding roller 1 carried by a swing arm 3 which is pivoted on a bridge piece formed by members 4, 5 carried on a rod 6 slidably mounted on the member 11, means 15, 16 to impart sliding movement to the bridge piece, means 25 to impart pivotal movement to the member 11 and guide means 18 to control such movement to move the roller along a path A, B, C, D parallel to and across the end face of the package. The roller 1 comprises a plurality of discs mounted co-axially in spaced apart relationship. The roller is pressed against the end of the package by a spring 7 on a bolt 8 which can be adjusted in length to move the roller 1 to a position indicated in broken lines to deal with different lengths of packages. An air cylinder 25 pivots the member 11 and a second air cylinder 15 mounted on the member 11 has the outer end of its piston rod 16 attached to the member 5. The rod 16 has a follower 17 which co-operates with a fixed cam 18. With the roller 1 in position B a package is moved in the direction of the arrow P to fold in an end portion a of the wrapper as shown in Fig. 3. The roller is then moved by the cylinders 15, 25 through positions C, D, to position A and then back to B to fold in the portion b of the wrapper. The flaps C and D are then folded down by known means e.g. fingers and ploughs. The package may be held closed by glue or by labelling. A second set of the apparatus may simultaneously close the other end of the package.
