Abstract
920,904. Heat treatment of quartz envelopes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 4, 1961 [Sept. 2, 1960], No. 30343/60. Class 56. In the manufacture of an electric lamp having a sealed quartz envelope containing electrical energy consuming means, the prefabricated quartz shell is heated, prior to the final evacuation or gas filling and sealing of the envelope, at a temperature of at least 1000‹ C. for a period of not less than 30 minutes in a vacuum or inert gas, the shell being kept out of contact with moisture during the period between such heating and the final sealing of the envelope. The period and temperature relation is shown on a curve passing through the points 8¢ hours at 1000‹ C., 4“ hours at 1100‹ C., 1¥ hours at 1200‹ C. and ¢ hour at 1300‹ C. Preferably, argon is used for the heating step and the final evacuation or gas filling and sealing are carried out immediately after the heating step.
