Abstract
1,125,003. Glass-metal seals. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 7 Sept., 1965, No. 38231/65. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H1] In making an incandescent lamp, a quartz envelope 1 with a tubular mouth 2 is sealed to a glass closure plug having an exhaust tube 4 within it, means for conducting current to the filament being disposed and sealed between the plug and the tubular mouth. The means may consist of lead-in wires 6, 7 attached to molydenum foils 8, 9 in turn attached to supporting and lead-in wires 10, 11 for the filament 12. The plug with the exhaust tube open is mounted upon a glass lathe, the filament and lead-in assembly is placed on either side of the plug, the mouth 2 of the envelope is slipped over the plug and heated until soft, a shaping tool being pressed against it. After cooling, the normal pump and fill operations are carried out through the exhaust tube which is then sealed off. To increase the current to the filament, two molybdenum foil sections may be connected in parallel between each external lead-in wire and the corresponding internal lead-in wire.
