Abstract

A filament of tantalum carbide may be formed in situ in an electric lamp by welding the ends of a length of tantalum wire to short lengths of thicker tantalum wire and welding these to tungsten wires sealed into a pinch. The pinch is then sealed into a lamp envelope, the envelope evacuated and the filament heated by the passage of current to drive off residual gas from the filament and envelope interior. The envelope is then filled with pure methane and sealed off. The filament is carbonized by heating for six hours at 2000 DEG -2400 DEG C. by the passage of current. The mixture of hydrogen and methane remaining in the envelope serves to prevent decarbonization.
