Abstract

Natural or regenerated cellulose fibres are dyed or printed with reactive dyestuffs other than those containing a sulphofluoride or a halogeno-triazine group, by applying the dyestuff together with an acid-binding agent, without the application of heat, and then storing the so impregnated materials in the moist condition for 2-48 hours at 10 DEG -40 DEG C. The acid-binding agent, e.g. an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, an alkali metal metasilicate or an alkali metal hydroxide, may be applied together with the dyestuff or may be subsequently applied. The dyestuff solution may contain a nonelectrolyte such as urea or a lower carboxylic acid amide, and an inorganic salt such as an alkali metal chloride or sulphate. The acidbinding agent solution, when subsequently applied, preferably contains a high concentration of salt. The dyeings are finally rinsed and soaped and, when appropriate, after-metallized. Suitable dyestuffs are of the stilbene, thioxanthone, azine, dioxazine, porphyrazine, anthraquinone and azo series, and numerous examples are given.
