Abstract

920,298. Storing liquefied gases. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Aug. 22, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960], No. 29242/60. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXXIII] A liquefied natural gas marine tanker is provided with a heat insulated tank 2 containing the liquefied gas, and the space between the tank and the hold 1 is filled with a porous material 3 and with a sealing liquid such as water or a hydrocarbon, whose freezing point is below ambient temperature and above the temperature of the liquefied gas. To reduce the stresses produced by hydrostatic pressure, sealing liquid may be circulated by a pump 8, being sucked out of the porous material at 9 and pumped on to the top of the material at 6 If a leak should develop in the tank 2, the sealing liquid will freeze around the leak and prevent excessive cooling of the hold 1. Heating elements may be embedded in the porous material to control the thickness of the frozen layer. The Provisional Specification also describes the application of the invention to reservoirs for storing liquefied gas at the surface of the earth.
