Abstract

1,077,193. Storing gases under pressure. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. March 8, 1966 [March 10, 1965], No. 10078/66. Heading F4P. [Also in Division F1] Natural gas or liquefied propane or butane 8 is discharged from an underground storage reservoir 6 by means of a displacing liquid 9, e.g. salt solution, subject to gas pressure in underground reservoir 9. With the liquid levels as shown and the gas in reservoir 7 at a pressure of 20 atmospheres, for example, gas 8 is discharged by opening valve 14. Further gas 8 under pressure is supplied through line 10 to restore the liquid levels. Gas is supplied to the reservoir 7 to maintain the pressure. In further embodiments, Figs. 2 to 4 (not shown), differing arrangements of the reservoirs and the lines for supplying and discharging the gases and liquid are illustrated. The pressurizing gas may be methane, natural gas, propane or butane or mixtures thereof. The reservoirs 6 and 7 may be formed by leaching a salt bed 4 below a sea bed 2, 3, or by mining.
