Abstract
1,259,242. Underground liquefied gas storage chambers. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 6 May, 1970 [2 June, 1969], No. 21749/70. Heading F4P. [Also in Division F1] An underground cavern 28 at the bottom of a bore hole 2, 18 for storing liquefied hydrocarbon gas, e.g. propane above an immiscible liquid, e.g. brine, has its lower brine portion connected by a duct 36 within the bore 2 to the lower part of an upper cavern 22 which also contains brine beneath an air space connected to atmosphere at 16 through an annular passage 20c surrounding a tube 20 serving as an inlet and outlet for the stored liquid; the duct 36 having its upper end sealed at 38 and having side apertures 36a leading to tube 20 which in turn has apertures 24 leading to the upper cavern 22. As shown, ground level 4 comprises a sea bed and both caverns 22, 28 are formed in rock salt 8. To charge cavern 28 liquefied gas is pumped through a valved duct 42 down the tube 20 and passages 40 resulting in brine being forced from cavern 28 up duct 36 and through apertures 36a, 34 into the lower portion of cavern 22; a valve in vent line 16 being open. To discharge the stored liquefied gas a valve 44 is opened and if necessary the air space above the brine in cavern 22 is pressurized, thereby forcing brine from cavern 22 through apertures 24, 36a and down duct 36 to cavern 28.
