Abstract

959,328. Storing liquefied gas. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Aug. 22, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960; April 25, 1961], Nos. 29901/61 and 14959/61. Divided out of 920,298. Heading F4P. A reservoir for storing liquefied natural gas comprises a hole at the surface of the ground 105 (Fig. 2) lined with porous material 103, such as cork or foamed synthetic plastic which may be retained by shuttering. The porous material is impregnated with water or heavy fuel oil which freezes around the inner surface of the porous material when the liquefied gas is added, to form an impermeable layer 102. To reduce the forces caused by hydrostatic pressure, the water or oil in the porous material may be circulated by a pump 108, being withdrawn at 109 and pumped back at 106. Alternatively, both fuel oil and water may be used to form in the porous material, proceeding from the inside of the reservoir, a layer of frozen oil, a section of circulating fuel oil, a layer of ice, and a section of circulating water. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the bottom of the reservoir consists of a layer of clay 12, and porous material impregnated with water or oil forms the inclined sides 10. Cooling tubes 121 are sunk in the ground around the reservoir. The cover consists of a plate 14, a heat-insulating layer 17 and an asphalt envelope 18. The edge of the plate has a flexible portion 15, to allow for expansion, and a portion 16 extending downwardly into the porous material 10 to form a seal. The cover may be supported on beams resting on aluminium columns inside the reservoir (Fig. 4, not shown). Specification 894,762 also is referred to.
