A sanitary cover for a mattress has a lower fabric part extending around three sides of the mattress and a waterproof sheet 8 extending across the top side of the mattress to complete a sleeve construction which covers the middle part of a mattress to which it is applied and a cover 13 is releasably fastened to one or both reinforced side flaps 3, 3a. Preferably, tensioned strips 11 of bias weave percole or muslin are stitched along the ends of the waterproof sheet 8 and the releasable fastenings may be hooks and eyes.
