Abstract

Solutions of alkali metal phosphates are produced together with carbon dioxide by continuously introducing phosphoric acid, an alkali metal carbonate, bicarbonate, or sesquicarbonate and water into one end of a tubular reactor where mixing and partial reaction occur, withdrawing the partially reacted mixture from the other end of the reactor, passing said mixture continuously into an agitated tank reactor in which further reaction occurs and gaseous carbon dioxide separates from the liquid phase without substantial foaming, continuously withdrawing carbon dioxide from the top of said agitated tank reactor, and continuously withdrawing alkali metal phosphate solution from the lower part of said agitated tank reactor. Phosphates specified are those of lithium, sodium and potassium, and the carbonate may be introduced as solid, aqueous solution or aqueous slurry. The carbon dioxide and phosphate solution withdrawn may be passed into the top and bottom respectively of a second agitated tank reactor, preferably larger than the first, to allow any unreacted carbonate and acid to react, and CO2 and phosphate solution withdrawn from the top and bottom respectively.
