Abstract

In exothermic reactions, e.g. neutralizing sulphonic acids, the mixed reaction product is recycled back to the reaction zone where it is mixed in a confined space with one reactant, and then, after agitations, with the second reactant. A suitable reactor consists of an outer closed shell 10, Fig. 2, to which a circulating tube 17 is concentrically mounted, leaving a free space at each end. Two impellers 19, 20 are mounted on a rotatable shaft 21 within the circulating tube, and the reacting liquids are separately fed, one through inlet 24, which discharges between the impellers, and the other through inlet 25 before them. In operation, a part of the final reaction product enters opening 15 and flows around the outer zone between the casing 10 and circulating tube 17, which it then enters and is mixed with the <PICT:0837585/III/1> first reactant (caustic soda) entering inlet 25; after thorough mixing by the impeller 20, the second reactant (sulphonic acid) is added through inlets 24, and the mixture circulates around the inner tube to exit 16. Preferably, caustic soda is in substantial excess over the sulphonic acid to prevent acid decomposition of the reaction product by the heat generated. The reactor is maintained filled with liquid, and is under pressure. The reaction product leaving exit 16 is mixed with added water, and passes to an evacuated still where volatiles are removed, and the reaction product, thereby cooled, is returned to the reactor, after tapping off a portion as completed product. The process may be applied to sulphonates or sulphates of long chain aliphatic hydrocarbons, fatty acids, or alcohols, glycerides, or polyoxyalkyl ethers using alkali or alkaline earth metal carbonates, bicarbonates or hydroxides; ammonia or organic bases.
