Abstract

In the sulphonation of hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids and phenols in a continuous process using oleum or SO3, the two reactants are separately pre-mixed with a part of the reaction product, and the reagent mixture then admitted to the main body of the reactant mixture at spaced points and rapidly dispersed therein. By this means the heat of reaction is limited and controlled. Suitable apparatus is described.ALSO:In exothermic reactions, e.g. the nitration or sulphonation of organic compounds, two reagents are separately pre-mixed with a part of the reaction product before admission at two spaced points in the main body of the reaction mixture. A vessel 1, Fig. 1, having a cooling jacket 2 is connected to two premixing vessels 6, 7, to which reaction product <PICT:0858058/III/1> from vessel 1 is pumped through pipes 10, 11 to the pre-mixers, and to which two proportioned reagents are added through pipes 8, 9. The pre-mixed diluted reagents flow through pipes 4, 5 and impinge on inclined blades 20 of a rotating dispersing element 16. Dispersion is assisted by a stirrer 17, and circulation is guided by a cooling coil 3. An annula ring 23 maintains the surface of the liquid mixture quiescent at the level of the discharge 22. In a modification (not shown) of the apparatus where one reactant is a gas, the pre-mixing chamber forms a cup-shaped chamber in the upper part of the reactor in which a dispersing member similar to element 16 above is mounted, above which a fan forces the gas into admixture with the reaction mixture fed to the dispersing element. The mixture is drawn down a central tube into the main body of the reaction mixture and unabsorbed gas is recirculated.
