Abstract

Vapour phase reactions of a plurality of gaseous reactants are effected by continuously feeding said reactants to a reaction zone at elevated temperature while stirring the mixture therein sufficiently to ensure substantial uniformity throughout said zone, and continuously withdrawing a portion of the substantially uniform mixture. Specified reactions are the partial oxidation of organic compounds with oxygen, e.g. of acetaldehyde to acetic and peracetic acids, and of hydrocarbons such as propylene, propane, isobutane, butane and pentane, and of alcohols such as isopropanol. In a suitable form of apparatus, <PICT:0892632/III/1> a reactor 11, inlet 26 for the supply of reactants via lines 23 and 24, outlet 27, and a fan 18 with blades 19 mounted on shaft 20 and driven by motor 22. Specifications 547,333 and 892,631 are referred to.ALSO:Vapour phase reactions of a plurality of gaseous reactants are effected by continuously feeding said reactants to a reaction zone maintained at elevated temperature while stirring the mixture therein sufficiently to ensure substantial uniformity throughout said zone, and continuously withdrawing a portion of the substantially uniform mixture. Specified reactions are the partial oxidation of organic compounds with gaseous oxygen, e.g. of acetaldehyde to acetic and peracetic acids, and of hydrocarbons such as propylene, propane, isobutane, butane and pentane, and of alcohols such as isopropanol. In the oxidation of acetaldehyde to peracetic acid, the temperature may be 120 DEG C.-200 DEG C. and the oxygen employed may contain ozone; preferably the reactor walls are of aluminium. Specifications 547,333 and 892,631 are referred to.
