Abstract
<PICT:0708901/III/1> Organic condensable compounds such as naphthas and kerosenes are passed in the liquid phase through conduits or tubes in a pile containing fissionable material such as uranium 235 or plutonium, whereby the organic substances are condensed under the action of fission products in the pile, the organic substances then being withdrawn, deactivated and the condensation products separated. The organic substances are pumped from the tank 1, through the heater 3a into the pile chamber 4. After cooling by means of the exchange 6, part of the product is recirculated via the pipe 7, the remainder passing to the de-activating vessels 8 and thence to the fractionating apparatus 10 from where unreacted compounds are recycled through the pile. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 gaseous reagents may be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
