Abstract

In a method for carrying out exothermic catalytic reactions with homogeneous flowing fluid reactants, e.g. the oxidation of naphthalene to phthalic anhydride or ethylene to ethylene oxide, the reacting temperature is maintained at predetermined values by indirect cooling with co-current flowing coolant characterized in that the temperature of admission of the cooling medium and the throughput of cooling medium are controlled independently and, preferably, automatically. Preferably the temperature of the coolant is controlled by relating it to the inlet temperature of the reaction zone and the quantity of coolant controlled in relation to the outlet temperature. The cooling medium may be recycled; or may be cooled or portionally cooled before recycling; or the reactants may be used as cooling medium.ALSO:In a method for carrying out exothermic catalytic reactions with homogeneous flowing fluid reactants, the reacting temperature is maintained at predetermined values by indirect cooling with co-current flowing coolant characterized in that the temperature of admission of the cooling medium and the throughput of cooling medium are controlled independently and, preferably, automatically. Preferably the temperature of the coolant is controlled by relating it to the inlet temperature of the reaction zone and the quantity of coolant controlled in relation to the outlet temperature. The cooling medium may be recycled; or may be cooled or portionally cooled before recycling; or the reactants may be used as cooling medium. This method is useful for the oxidation of naphthalene to phthallic anhydride or ethylene to ethylene oxide and allows reaction tubes of wider diameter and lengths of 20-50 feet and longer, instead of the usual 6 feet.
