Abstract
Apparatus for carrying out chemical reactions in the gaseous phase, particularly oxidations, e.g. the partial oxidation of gaseous hydrocarbons, comprises a preferably cylindrical shell 8 provided with a reaction-product discharge tube 17 which extends inside the shell and is spaced therefrom to form an annular space 16 into which one of the reactants, e.g. hydrocarbons, is fed from inlet 6, the other reactant, e.g. oxygen, being passed through a pipe 24 into the discharge tube 17 and the distance to which the pipe 24 penetrates into tube 17 being adjustable by means of a device 32 so that the reaction time and hence the degree of oxidation may be controlled. The reaction is quenched by, for example, water, which is forced through pipe 22 into the lower end of tube 17. The reactant entering at 6 is directed from an annular manifold 15 through perforations 14 in the lower end of shell 8, is passed upwardly through zone 16 and then downwardly through pipe 17 where the other reactant is introduced through perforations 25 in the lower end of pipe 24. Fins 18 on the exterior of tube 17 serve to preheat the reactant entering at 6. <PICT:0647169/III/1>
