Abstract

919,851. Stripping carding surfaces. COOK & CO., MANCHESTER, Ltd., and MILNES, A. H. Nov. 29, 1960 [Dec. 12, 1959], No. 42325/59. Class 120 (1). A bank of carding engines has each cylinder and doffer pneumatically stripped during operation by traversing suction nozzles controlled in such manner that the engines are stripped in turn. In each carding engine, suction nozzles are carried in proximity to the main cylinder and the doffer by a double helical screw 23 driven through a pulley 25 associated with a clutch for rendering the screw 23 operative under the influence of a solenoid. When the nozzles have moved across the cylinder and doffer, a lever mounted on the nozzle carriage engages an abutment 42 to cut off the nozzles from the suction source and energize a solenoid on the next carding engine in the stripping series. The nozzles of the first carding engine are returned to the starting position, whereupon the first solenoid is deenergized and the clutch disengaged. In a modification, only a half of each carding surface is stripped during a single nozzle traverse, Another modification has means for stripping cylinders and doffers independently and another has a traversing compressed air nozzle serving to blow fibres to the top of the card clothing of the cylinder adjacent the flats. It is preferred to use trapezium shaped suction nozzles. An air blast arrangement is provided for piecing up separated portions of web.
